I fully blame Elizabeth Jane Salix for this album. She played cello on the album “Anthems for an Age Arriving,” which was originally slated to include the song Apple Blossoms. For various reasons, it was cut from the album, and sat unfinished until this past December, when I mixed it and gave it to a few friends as a Yule present.

Elizabeth was quite fervent in her demands that I release it to the general public. To put it mildly. I finally said okay, but I didn’t want to just release a one song EP.

I began to look through my archives to see if there was a song or two I could pair it with, as a B side. There was a few songs I had written for fun, a few electronic tracks I had recorded as an experiment in learning how to sequence MIDI, and then I found my files of film score music, themes and songs written for films that were never used.

Often a director will tell a composer write a theme in the style of Beethoven. Then upon listening to it, realize they really meant Schubert. And after hearing Schubert, opt to go for something bizarre and dissonant instead.

Most of these songs are presented as they were originally recorded. A few I added a few things to and remixed. The final song, Take ‘em to Missouri, was a completely improvised guitar jam I recorded when I had a client cancel on me last minute, and left the studio paid for. I asked my friend Matt King to improvise a “Dukes of Hazzard” style intro narration for it. I told him to cut loose and have fun. He did.

I have always enjoyed when one of my favorite bands releases a “B-sides” or “Lost Songs” album, as it really gives you a chance to see their writing styles, their choices for albums, and gives you a greater opportunity to connect with their music. I hope you feel the same, and enjoy this album in that light.
